Whoever said “basic” was “boring” must not have been very interesting!

basic style

My personal style is hard to explain, I love dressing up, I love dressing down, I wear too many leggings for my own good, I enjoy taking a fashion risk once in a while, but for the most part, I keep my outfits *very* simple. I guess I’m “basic”…but I’m basic + proud! 🙂

I always say “it’s not what you wear, but how you wear it”. If you like to dress to the nines everyday, honestly…more power to you! But if you’re like me, skinny jeans and a solid top is usually the route I take. With that said, I like to spice up my simple looks! Taking a basic piece + turning it into something fab allows me the comfort I crave + the confidence I need to handle the day!

For today’s post, I wanted to focus on one of my favorite “basic” pieces…tanks!

basics tank top style

I probably reach for beater tanks more so than any other top in my wardrobe. They’re comfortable, they’re flattering, you can wear them with a normal bra + keep your straps hidden, they’re perfect under a cardigan or hoodie, they come in every color under the sun, and they go with ALL kinds of bottoms!

What else do I love about beaters? They’re essentially a blank canvas, so styling + accessorizing them is SO easy + SO much fun!

Two of my must have accessories are statement necklaces + scarves; both pair perfectly with tanks! 🙂

You can most certainly wear a beater for day or night. By adjusting your accessories accordingly, you can create two completely different looks – suitable for two completely different occasions.

A basic tank also makes room for some fun shoes!

And we allllll know that athleisure is basically  taking over the fashion world, so pairing a tank with leggings is an easy way to nail that trend!

On Summer days that I can get away with wearing leggings, a tank is usually my go-to top of choice!
I love these electric blue soft twill skimmer leggings from NoNonsense !

So where do I get my tanks?

The majority of them are from Target!

Their long + lean tanks are my absolute favorite. They retail for $9, which isn’t the worst, but keep an eye on their sales so you can stock up! They’ll last you for quite a while. 🙂

I have a closet full of simple pieces + I’ve got no shame in my basic game! Wear what makes you feel good, dress up, dress down, try something new. Don’t just put your clothes on…wear them! You can make any outfit fun, no matter how simple or “boring” it may be.

Remember, it’s not what you wear, it’s how you wear it! 😉

XOXO

What are some of your favorite basic pieces?

Are you a beater tank fan like me!? If so, where do you get yours?

  1. So glad to hear I’m not the only one in love with basic beater tanks. Which, by the way, I also purchase at Target. Target is my go to store for basics, tees and tanks! Also, I love the skirt in the day and night photo, so cute! Great post!

    • Thanks for reading Kara!! Basic pieces are the best & I’m so glad there’s another Target tank fan! I’m due for a restock soon! 🙂 It took me a while to figure out that it was OK to dress up a tank, now it’s one of my favorite combos!

  2. I love all the options you’ve shown here! I am a basic tank/tee girl as well but haven’t really tried dressing them up! Target is my go to for basics too!

  3. I love how you styled the “basic” tank to make it not so basic. It’s such a great staple piece! That first pic of you is stunning! My go-to basic style is a Forever 21 T-shirt with denim cutoffs and in the colder months a tunic with leggings. Like you, I like to dress up but I prefer to dress down and being comfortable more. Loved the post babe! Xoxo

    • Thank you Gail!! I love your go-to’s too! Tee’s and cut offs or leggings & longer shirts can be so stylish, but still comfortable! I’m not sure I’ll ever be one of those girls that’ll sacrifice all comfort for fashion LOL.

  4. Um! Can we just talk about how amazing you are!! I love everything about this post girl!! These are great tips and I just love how you style basics!! You truly are an inspiration!! I can’t wait to pull out my tanks and start styling them!! You are just stunning girl!! And those jeans look INCREDIBLE on you! Rock it girl!

    • Aww! I would definitely miss Target too!! They definitely have my favorite tanks, but Old Navy has some great ones too – I get a lot of mine from there as well!! Thanks for reading! XO

  5. I am the same way! I love getting dressed up but leggings and a long tee is usually what you can find me in. I prefer simple, solid shirts because I’m all about the accessories. No shame in my basic game either!

  6. Love how you can turn something so simple into something fabulous! 🙂 I use to be a tank person (before I had kids and lost my chest lol), now I still wear them, but usually under a hoodie. (Why am I wearing a hoodie when it is 90+ out?!) But a good t-shirt works pretty good too. 😉 You look fantastic in all of your looks, and am absolutely stunned by how well they paired with your skirts. Took them to a whole new level… as always 🙂

    • Thank you Angie!!! 🙂 Tees & tanks are the best. And yes, why are you wearing a hoodie in 90+?! LOL! That skirt is one of my all time favorites!! I really like both the up and down looks too! That scarf and the chunky pearls get so much use. I’m so glad you enjoyedd! ☺️

  7. Loved reading your posts! I am the same way with v-neck tees. I wear them constantly and it’s so easy to throw a quick outfit together. Some of my favorite ones are from Target- they have the best basics! 🙂

    • Yes! I always say that if I could only shop in one store forever, it’d be target! I’ll have to scope out their v-necks next time!! Thanks for reading Ashley! ❤️

  8. I also love the bp tanks from nordstrom. I’m not a racer back fan. They’re the wife beater shape. But they’re kinda sheer. If I wear them alone i feel like I’m wearing the naked dress from satc lol!

    • LOL!!! I like the idea of racer backs, but they’re so tricky when it comes to bra straps. I hate when my straps are showing :(. And I feel the same about sheer – although sometimes they can be sexy! But the best thing about tanks is that you can throw on a cardigan & wear them all year long! 🙂

  9. Love the basics!! 🙂 Thanks for sharing where you get most of your tanks. I’ll have to take a look next time I’m at Target. Long is key for me. The older I get, the longer I want the tops, LOL. I’m most comfy in basics and honestly, all my money lately is going towards vet bills, so basic is becoming my only choice, lol. Great post!

    • Aww, yes you must try the target layering tanks!! They have a few styles, but I like the scoop neck ones that are lightly ribbed. And I’m with you, comfy + basic all day!! You’re such a good Mama to BW, I hope he’s been doing ok! XO 🙂

  10. Can I just say that I LOVE your style? One of the reasons why I started to follow your blog (before I realized that you were such an awesome person with an incredible blog) was that your style is pretty much the epitome of what I’d love my fashion style to be. And I was hoping for tips!! 🙂
(Now let me add that I don’t put enough effort / money into my style to actually have one yet. HA! But I’ve been trying to do better at bargain shopping and ONLY buying pieces that I love. In the past, I too often bought things just because they were on sale and they fit).
I’ve definitely been investing in some fun pieces, and my outfits are often inspired by outfits that you’ve worn. I’m a HUGE fan of skinny jeans, scarves, and basics! (And this post reminded me that I need to also invest in some fun, statement necklaces. They really do turn a simple outfit into a fabulous one)!
Keep up the AMAZING blogging!!! I haven’t commented as much lately, because the mommy life has been soooo busy. BUT I always look forward to your blogs and videos!! 🙂

    • Oh my goodness, you are so sweet!!! Thank you so much, this comment completely made my day!

Sometimes I dont feel qualified to dish out fashion advice because my style really is pretty simple, but I figure the majority of women are living the simple life too – so I’m happy when people are inspired or enjoy what I share! I’m definitely not one to spend a ton of $$ on clothes, I feel like style is so much more about the way you wear clothes than the actual clothes themselves. I used to but so much, but I’ve been obsessed with downsizing my wardrobe! Basic pieces + a great collections of accessories = my secret recipe!! 😉

I appreciate you reading & the support more than you know!! I struggle to keep up with everyone’s blogs too, so you taking the time to comment means so much!

Keep playing around with your style, you’ll eventually find pieces that work perfectly for you & make you feel great! For me, comfort & confidence is #1!☺️❤️❤️
