To the people who pay attention to the expiration dates on their makeup, I applaud you. For the rest of ya (myself included)…this post is for you!
As we know, makeup is not meant to last forever. And while some products really give you a run for your money and wear like new for years and years, it’s important to sift through your collection every so often and toss the things that are probably no longer healthy for your skin. All (well, most) of our makeup has a little graphic on the packaging indicating when a product should be tossed – make note of those.
If a product doesn’t have this indicator, or maybe it’s been worn off, here’s the rule of thumb:
- Concealer: 12-18 months
- Foundation: 12 months
- Blush/Bronzer: 24 months
- Mascara: 3 months
- Eyeshadow: 2 years for powder, 1 year for cream
- Eyeliner: 3-6months
- Lipstick: 12 months
- Lipgloss: 6-12 months
- Brushes: 1-5 years
- Sponges: 1 month
- Nail Polish: 12 months
It’s important to note that all makeup is different; for example the foundation shown above has a 24 month (verses the traditional 12 month) lifespan.
I was asked to share my makeup collection and thought this would be the perfect opportunity to show you the products that I have…and clean house at the same time! Take a look:

It actually felt *really good* to clean that out. I’ve been slowly sifting through all of my belongings and trying to downsize; tackling the makeup was a big one!
Are you good about tossing your makeup? What do you have the hardest time letting go of?
XOXO
HI Amanda. Is Firmoo the brand of glasses? They look great on you! Also I’m guilty of keeping my makeup for years…you’ve inspired me to do a house cleaning. I’m not a pack rat but with makeup I really do get a lot for my money apparently! 😀
Firmoo.com is the site! And thank you, they have a really cute selection! The makeup hoarding is real – I hope have fun cleaning out! It does feel good afterwards 🙂 XOXO
I know how to read the label and I know I need to pay better attention, but there I some things I can’t let go of.
Hahaha!! I hear you girl, I was really struggling with some products!!
