I love trying my hand at homemade snacks for my son. They can be a labor of love and truthfully, I don’t do it as much as I would like to. However, once in a while you come across a recipe that is not only totally doable, but turns out delicious as well!
This was originally shared by Feeding Tiny Bellies and it’s a recipe for homemade goldfish. Now, I would have LOVED to make the goldfish, but I don’t have that little fish mold, so cheez-its it was! I was surprised by how easy these were to prepare and how great they turned out on the first run.

Recipe from Feeding Tiny Bellies with some personal notes/changes!
Ingredients:
- 2 cups (8 oz) shredded cheddar cheese (I shredded one block!)
- 1 cup all purpose flour
- 4 tbsp unsalted butter, cold
- 1-2 tbsp ice water, as needed
Instructions:
PART 1:
- Add shredded cheese, flour, and butter to a food processor and pulse until a grainy, sand-like texture forms
- If needed, add 1 to 2 tablespoons of iced cold water to the food processor and pulse until it starts to form into a dough.
- Place dough mixture onto a surface and lightly knead it.
- Form a disc with the dough, wrap it in plastic, and refrigerate for 30 minutes (I left it in there for a couple hours and resumed part 2 once my son went to sleep)
PART 2:
- Pre-heat oven to 350 F degrees.
- Roll the dough onto a lightly floured surface ⅛ to ¼ of an inch thick. Cut out small shapes or use a a pizza slicer to make square-shaped crackers.
- Re-roll the dough scraps and cut out more crackers. Repeat until all of the dough is used up.
- Place the shapes on a parchment paper lined pan. If making cheez-its, use a straw to poke a hole in each one.
- Bake the crackers at 350 F degrees for 10 minutes or until the edges are slightly brown. I ended up baking mine for about 15minutes.
- Let cool, and enjoy!
These came out so tasty, the whole family loved them. I ended up yielding two large trays worth, which was about 120 crackers. I can’t wait to make these again! I’ll have to find some fun, mini cookie cutters and try out some different shapes.
It’s so rewarding being able to make your own food at home! Knowing exactly what your family is eating is a great feeling. Not to mention, this recipe immediately incentivized me to continue trying to make some more things from scratch. One of these days I’ll experiment with sandwich bread.
Let me know if you give these a try!
XOXO
